               Worthie: Sr: as I ame not ignorante (soe ought<lb/>
               I to bee sencible) of the Falce Aspertions  Authorlesse<lb/>
               Toungues haue layde uppon mee, in the Reportes of<lb/>
               the unffortunate passage, latelye happened, Betwene<lb/>
               the Lord Bruce, and my selfe, w<ex>hi</ex>ch as they are <lb/>
               spread heere, soe maye I iustlye ffeare they Raigne<lb/>

               of this nature, By oath, or by sworde, The ffirst<lb/>
               is due to Magistrates, and Communicable to ffrindes,<lb/>
               Theother to such, as Maliciouslye slaunder, and <lb/>
               impudentlye deffend their Assertion, yor: Love, not<lb/>
               my meritt Assures mee, yow hould mee yor: ffrinde,<lb/>

               The: next is, my Accomplishemte: of my ffirst<lb/>

               and weapon, w<ex>hi</ex>ch I sent by a servante of myne by<lb/>
               Post from Rotterdam, assoone as I landed there:<lb/>
               The Receipte of wch., ioyned w<ex>i</ex>th an acknoweledgmte:<lb/>

               place Allotted for Randevous, where hee accompanyed <lb/>
               wth Mr: Cranfforde an Englishe gentleman, For,<lb/>
               his second, a Chirurgeon, and a Man, Arryved w<ex>i</ex>th <lb/>
               all the speede hee could, and there haveinge once Ren=<lb break="no"/>
               dered himselfe, I Addressed my second, Sr: John Heydon,<lb/>
               to lett him understand, that nowe all ffollowinge should<lb/>
               bee don<ex>n</ex>e by Conscent, As Conscerninge the Tearmes<lb/>
               whereon wee should ffight, As alsoe the place, To<lb/>
               our secondes wee gave power ffor their Appointemt<ex>es</ex>,<lb/>
               whoe Agreed wee should goe to Antwerpe, ffrom thence<lb/>
               to Bargen=<unclear>up</unclear>=zome, where in the middwaye, butt<lb/>
               a village devides the States Territoryes ffrom<lb/>
               the Archdukes, and there was the destined stage, to<lb/>
               the ende that haveinge ended, hee that could might<lb/>
               prsentlye exempt himselfe ffrom the Justice of the <lb/>
               Countrye, by Retyreinge into the domynion not offended:

               Itt: was ffurther Concluded, that in Case any should<lb/>
               ffall, or slipp: that then the Combatt should Cease,<lb/>
               and hee whose yll ffortune had soe subiected him,<lb/>
               was to acknoweledge his lyfe to haue been in theothers<lb/>
               handes, Butt in Case one partyes sworde should <lb/>
               Breake (Because that could onely Chaunce by hazard)<lb/>
               It was agreed that theother should take noe advaun<lb/>
               <fw type="catch" place="bot-right">tage</fw>

               advauntage, Butt eyther then bee made ffrindes, or els by<lb/>
               even Tearmes goe to it agayne;

               Thus: theise Conclusions beinge by each of them<lb/>
               Related to his partye, were by both of us Approved, and <lb/>
               Assented to, accordinglye, wee embarcqued, ffor Antwerpe,<lb/>
               And by reason<ex>n</ex> my Lord (as I Conceyve because hee could <lb/>
               not handsomelye wthout daunger of discoverye) had<lb/>
               not payred his sworde, I sent him att Paris, one of the<lb/>
               same length but twyce as Broade, My second excepted <lb/>
               against it, and Advised mee to Match  myne owne,<lb/>
               and sent him the Choyce. w<ex>hi</ex>ch I obayed (it beinge as<lb/>
               yow knowe the Challengers: privelidge to ellect the<lb/>
               weapon), Att that deliverye of the swordes (wch was<lb/>
               p<ex>er</ex>fformed by Sr: John Heydon, It pleased the Lord<lb/>
               Bruce to Choose myne owne, and then past expectac<ex>i</ex>on,<lb/>
               hee tould Sr: John Heydon, that hee ffounde himselfe<lb/>
               soe farre behinde hand, as a little of my Bloode,<lb/>
               would not serve his turne, And thereffore hee was<lb/>
               nowe Resolued to haue mee alone, Because hee knewe,<lb/>
               (ffor I will use his owne wordes) that soe worthie a<lb/>
               gentleman, and my ffrinde could not endure to stande<lb/>
               by, and see him doe that hee must to satisfye himselfe,<lb/>
               and his honnor:

               Heereunto: Sr: John Heydon Replyed, that such<lb/>
               intenc<ex>i</ex>ons, weere Bloodye, and Butcherlye, ffarr<lb/>

               The: Lord ffor Aunsweare onely Reitterated his<lb/>
               fformer Resoluc<ex>i</ex>on:

               Whereuppon: Sr: John leavinge him the<lb/>
               sworde hee had ellected, delivered mee theother, wth<lb/>
               his determinac<ex>i</ex>on, The wch, (not matter but manner)<lb/>
               soe moved mee, Although to my Remembraunce I had   <lb/>
               not of a longe tyme eaten more Liberallye then att<lb/>
               dynner, and thereffore unffitt ffor such an Acc<ex>i</ex>on, <lb/>
               seeinge the Chirurgeons hould a wounde uppon a<lb/>
               ffull stomacke much more daungerous then otherwise,<lb/>
               I requested my second to Certiffye him, I would<lb/>
               presentlye decyde the difference, and thereffore hee<lb/>
               should ymediatelye meete mee on horsbacke, onely<lb/>
               wayted on by our Chirurgeons they beinge unarmed:

               Together: wee Rode, (But one beffore theother<lb/>
               som<ex>m</ex>e twelve score) aboute some two Englishe Myles,<lb/>
               and there passion haveinge soe weake an enemye <lb/>
               to Assayle, as my direction, my passion easely becam<ex>m</ex>e<lb/>
               victor, and useinge hir power made mee obedyent to<lb/>
               hir Comaundemte:  I beinge verely madde w<ex>i</ex>th Anger,<lb/>
               <fw type="catch" place="bot-right">the Lord,</fw>

               the Lord Bruce should thirst after my lyfe, w<ex>i</ex>th <lb/>
               a kind of Assurednes, seeinge I had come soe farr,<lb/>
               and needleslye to give him leave to Regayne his<lb/>
               lost Reputac<ex>i</ex>on, I Badd him alight, w<ex>hi</ex>ch w<ex>i</ex>th all<lb/>
               willingnes hee quicklye graunted, and there in a<lb/>
               Meadowe (Anckle deepe in water att the least)<lb/>
               Biddinge ffarewell to our dublett<ex>es</ex>, in our shirtes<lb/>
               began to Charge each other, haveinge affore Com=<lb break="no"/>
               maunded our Chirurgeons to wthdrawe themselves a<lb/>
               prettye distaunce ffrom us, Coniureinge them besides,<lb/>
               as they respected our favors: or their owne saffetyes,<lb/>
               not to stirre, Butt sufferr us to execute our pleasures, <lb/>
               wee beinge fullye resolued, (god fforgive us) to dis=<lb break="no"/>
               patch  each other by what meanes wee could:

               I: made a Thrust att <del rend="strikethrough">him</del> myne enemye, But was<lb/>
               shorte, and in draweinge Backe myne Arme, I<lb/>
               receyved agreate wounde, w<ex>i</ex>th a Blowe thereon,<lb/>
               wch I interpreted as a Rewarde ffor my shorte<lb/>
               shooteinge, Butt in Revenge, I prest it to him, though<lb/>
               I then mist him alsoe, And then receyvinge a<lb/>
               wounde in my Right papp, w<ex>hi</ex>ch past levell through<lb/>
               my Bodye, and almost to my Backe, and there<lb/>
               wee wrestled ffor the two greatest, and dearest<lb/>
               prises wee could ever expect, Tryall for honnor:<lb/>
               and lyfe; In w<ex>hi</ex>ch wrestlinge, my hande haveinge<lb/>
               butt an ordinarye glove on it) lost one of hir<lb/>
